Why Preserve Point San Pablo?

The above map displays the current property ownership of Point San Pablo. The gray areas are owned by the City of Richmond, the pink by Chevron, and the green by the current ownership of Point San Pablo Yacht Harbor.

Point San Pablo remains largely open space. The Chevron owned areas of the map currently remain undeveloped land in pristine condition. The City of Richmond currently leases a small section (Terminal 4) to a commercial interest. Point San Pablo Yacht Harbor (the green area) is the only area offering public access on a limited basis, and most of the property is undeveloped open space. In other words, there is no current use of the collected land on the Point that would offer a compelling reason not to offer public access, for the public good.

Unspoiled shore-side access to the Bay is becoming increasingly limited. There are opportunities here for hiking, excellent fishing from the shore, exploration of the natural world and lots more.

Our Goals

  1. To preserve Point San Pablo Yacht Harbor as a vibrant, sustainable community including 12 floating homes, 9 live-aboard vessels, commercial/fishing vessels and as an historic recreational marina providing access to the San Francisco Bay. To provide continued ferry service from the Harbor to the historic Brother's Island Lighthouse.
  2. To support compliance with the San Franciso Bay Conservation and Development Commission's approved plan for the Harbor, including significantly improved public access and upgrades to the Harbor.
  3. To preserve the adjoining land (currently under the same ownership as the Harbor) and shoreline as publicly accessible open space for recreational use, study of natural habitats, protection of indigenous species and educational purposes.
  4. Should it prove possible, for the Point San Pablo Preservation Society to purchase the Point San Pablo Yacht Harbor and adjoining land to comply with the goals outlined above. The adjoining land to be used in perpetuity for Harbor service facilities, public use (a museum including a nature center) and as publicly accessible open space.
  5. To support opening the land adjoining the Point San Pablo Yacht Harbor parcel, currently owned by the Chevron Corporation, to public access as unspoiled open space through working with Chevron to obtain a conservation easement consistent with the public good.
  6. To support the City of Richmond's General Plan preferred use of the balance of Point San Pablo as publicly accessible open space.
  7. To support the completion of the San Francisco Bay Trail through the Point Molate and Point San Pablo area.
